Recreation
Recreation has long established itself as an identifier to quality of life. Clallam County's natural resources create recreational opportunities hard to match by other areas. World Class surfers drive to what some call "the end of the earth," to just get a look at the extreme surf of Neah Bay.
Hurricane Ridge offers winter snowboard or ski trips and, summer nature hikes an hour from home. Lake Crescent has smooth glacier water for skiing, wake boarding, pleasure boating or exploring. Lifelong residents are still uncovering Lake Crescent's treasure spots.
Olympic National Park Nature's Theme Park
The No. 1 Olympic Peninsula attraction is the Olympic National Park. Millions of families have explored and discovered the natural wonders of Olympic National Park. It's easy to see why.
- Olympic National Park The park has a distinctive rainforest, with a moss covered forest floor and 300-foot tall trees. The park is the third-largest national park in the United States. In 2002 the acreage was 922,651 acres, or about the size of Rhode Island, with 95 percent designated as wilderness. In 2003, more than 3.6 million visitors enjoyed the more than 600 miles of various levels of hiking trails (trails range from mild, easy strolls to rustic, overnight hikes).
"It was the North Olympic people who after years of dedication, effort, staggering obstacles and reverses and compromising their future economic benefits, should be given most of the credit for the establishment of the Olympic National Park."
-Chris Morganroth, Park Ranger, 1938

The Three-Generation Sport: Walking
The most universal recreation is walking. Guests are continually intrigued by area paths such as The Olympic Discovery Trail. The trail takes walkers, bikers and jobbers by winding trails through forests, valley's and ocean-front scenery -- at retirement ease, if they wish. When finished, the nearly 100-mile-long trail will demonstrate to those with active lifestyles the Olympic Peninsula is for them.
