A New Year… An Exciting New Project
Port Angeles is Introducing Metro-Net, a HUGE Citywide Wireless Network…and OlyPen is Proud to be Part of It! As we kick off 2012, OlyPen is excited to announce that, by the end of the year, Port Angeles could have the nation’s largest citywide wireless network in place, and that we get to play a part in this ground-breaking development!
This new network, known as Metro-Net, will use cutting-edge technology to connect the city, using almost three miles of newly installed fiber lines. As a result, the entire 10.7 square mile town of Port Angeles will be virtually one giant internet hot spot. While other communities across America have tried similar citywide networks, Metro-Net is bigger and more expansive than its counterparts. “This is what most cities can only dream of,” Greg Murphy, vice president of outdoor and mesh networks with Aruba Networks, was quoted as saying in the Peninsula Daily News.
And what a dream it is. Metro-Net is projected to have a huge impact on the city of Port Angeles, in a number of important ways. First of all, the citywide network will improve public safety by serving as an important tool for law enforcement officials, fire fighters, and other first responders. Metro-Net will be a boon to police officers, who will be able to use the network to quickly access information about locations and criminal activity, file reports, and even control surveillance cameras from the field, rather than waiting until they can get back to a wired connection inside the station house. Metro-Net will also help fire fighting personnel to do their work more quickly and efficiently. The network will allow them to get quick, updated information when responding to fires, and even give them the capability to access patient information when responding to a medical call. In this capacity, Metro-Net has the potential to serve as a life-saving tool for the people of our community.
This citywide wireless network also stands to benefit the people of Port Angeles by allowing residents and visitors to connect to the internet from anywhere within the city. That’s where OlyPen comes in. As a component of Metro-Net, the city of Port Angeles will offer subscription-based wireless internet hot spot service throughout the city. This internet service will, at least initially, be exclusively provided by OlyPen.
We’re also pleased to announce that, in addition to subscription-based wireless service, OlyPen will provide limited free wireless internet access to the people of Port Angeles, as part of the city’s Metro-Net program. Once Metro-Net is in place, OlyPen will provide one hour of free wireless internet hot spot service per person each day. In addition, we’ll also provide 24-hour completely free wireless access throughout the city 12 days of the year. These free days will be determined by the city, and will likely coincide with local festivals, such as Derby Days, or the Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival.
Such services may be in place very soon. While provisions of the federal grant provided to help offset program installation costs mandate that Metro-Net is up and running by August 2013, city officials believe that the network could be in place even sooner, perhaps even by the end of 2012.
The OlyPen team is thrilled to be part of such an exciting technological advance within our community, and will keep our customers updated on Metro-Net’s development. “We feel extremely fortunate and proud to be part of something of this scope and sophistication,” says OlyPen founder and President Mike Breen. “Our community is lucky to be putting something in place that few other cities in our nation have, and we at OlyPen are excited to have a hand in it. Metro-Net is a wonderful development for the city of Port Angeles and its people, and we’re looking forward to watching it grow and benefit the lives of people in our community for years to come.”
