Port Angeles is Introducing Metro-Net…

The OlyPen Newsletter

A New Year… An Exciting New Project

Port Angeles is Introducing Metro-Net, a HUGE Citywide Wireless Network…and OlyPen is Proud to be Part of It! As we kick off 2012, OlyPen is excited to announce that, by the end of the year, Port Angeles could have the nation’s largest citywide wireless network in place, and that we get to play a part in this ground-breaking development!

This new network, known as Metro-Net, will use cutting-edge technology to connect the city, using almost three miles of newly installed fiber lines. As a result, the entire 10.7 square mile town of Port Angeles will be virtually one giant internet hot spot. While other communities across America have tried similar citywide networks, Metro-Net is bigger and more expansive than its counterparts. “This is what most cities can only dream of,” Greg Murphy, vice president of outdoor and mesh networks with Aruba Networks, was quoted as saying in the Peninsula Daily News.

And what a dream it is. Metro-Net is projected to have a huge impact on the city of Port Angeles, in a number of important ways. First of all, the citywide network will improve public safety by serving as an important tool for law enforcement officials, fire fighters, and other first responders. Metro-Net will be a boon to police officers, who will be able to use the network to quickly access information about locations and criminal activity, file reports, and even control surveillance cameras from the field, rather than waiting until they can get back to a wired connection inside the station house. Metro-Net will also help fire fighting personnel to do their work more quickly and efficiently. The network will allow them to get quick, updated information when responding to fires, and even give them the capability to access patient information when responding to a medical call. In this capacity, Metro-Net has the potential to serve as a life-saving tool for the people of our community.

This citywide wireless network also stands to benefit the people of Port Angeles by allowing residents and visitors to connect to the internet from anywhere within the city. That’s where OlyPen comes in. As a component of Metro-Net, the city of Port Angeles will offer subscription-based wireless internet hot spot service throughout the city. This internet service will, at least initially, be exclusively provided by OlyPen.

We’re also pleased to announce that, in addition to subscription-based wireless service, OlyPen will provide limited free wireless internet access to the people of Port Angeles, as part of the city’s Metro-Net program. Once Metro-Net is in place, OlyPen will provide one hour of free wireless internet hot spot service per person each day. In addition, we’ll also provide 24-hour completely free wireless access throughout the city 12 days of the year. These free days will be determined by the city, and will likely coincide with local festivals, such as Derby Days, or the Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival.

Such services may be in place very soon. While provisions of the federal grant provided to help offset program installation costs mandate that Metro-Net is up and running by August 2013, city officials believe that the network could be in place even sooner, perhaps even by the end of 2012.

The OlyPen team is thrilled to be part of such an exciting technological advance within our community, and will keep our customers updated on Metro-Net’s development. “We feel extremely fortunate and proud to be part of something of this scope and sophistication,” says OlyPen founder and President Mike Breen. “Our community is lucky to be putting something in place that few other cities in our nation have, and we at OlyPen are excited to have a hand in it. Metro-Net is a wonderful development for the city of Port Angeles and its people, and we’re looking forward to watching it grow and benefit the lives of people in our community for years to come.”

2012 Washington State Small Business Award Competition Begins

November 4th, 2011

It’s no secret small businesses make significant contributions to the state’s economy and they bring innovative products and services to the marketplace.  They are an important source of employment and opportunity throughout the state.  Seattle District SBA Office wants to recognize these entrepreneurs and those who support and champion small businesses.  Help us by nominating candidates for our upcoming awards program.  Last year, two of our local winners received National awards and represented Washington state during National Small Business Week ceremonies in Washington DC.

“The determination and ingenuity of America’s workers and entrepreneurs are major contributors to the strength of the American economy” says Nancy Porzio, Seattle District Director.  “Over 99% of all employer firms are small businesses, employ 51% of all people and have generated over two-thirds of new jobs in the past decade.  Washington State is home to approximately 550,000 small businesses and make up 98% of the state’s employers.  Small business is BIG in Washington State”, she adds.

Any individual or organization may submit nominations.  A company, owner, or business advocate can also self-nominate.  Award categories include:

  • ·Small Business Person of the Year
  • ·Small Business Exporter of the Year
  • ·SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year
  • ·Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year
  • ·Entrepreneurial Success Award

Small Business Champion Award recipients are individuals or organizations who have dedicated their professional skills or personal talents to supporting small businesses through advocacy and volunteer efforts.  Nominees may or may not be small business owners.  Categories include:

  • ·Financial Services Champion of the Year
  • ·Home-Based Business Champion of the Year
  • ·Minority Small Business Champion of the Year
  • ·Veteran Small Business Champion of the Year
  • ·Women in Business Champion of the Year

The winner of the Washington State Small Business Person of the Year, along with other state winners will be honored locally at the Washington State Awards Gala in the Spring 2012 and continue on to compete for national honors.

State awards $48 million for affordable housing projects

November 1st, 2011

State awards $48 million for affordable housing projects

Housing Trust Fund investment will build or rehab over 1,600 units for people in need and support over 1,800 jobs now, 500 permanent jobs after completion

OLYMPIA, WA – The Washington State Department of Commerce awarded more than $48 million from the state’s Housing Trust Fund for 47 affordable housing projects across the state.  Approximately 1,647 housing units will be built or rehabilitated. The projects will directly support an estimated 1,800- 2,000 jobs, with about 500 local jobs supported annually once the projects are completed.

“The affordable housing and jobs provided by these projects are invaluable to Washington’s communities as need has increased during this recession,” said Gov. Chris Gregoire. “Struggling families and individuals will have more safe housing options, and communities will benefit from the jobs created.”

Projects include multi-family rental housing and single-family homeownership programs across the state serving low-income individuals and families including seniors, people with physical or developmental disabilities, farm workers, homeless families with children, and homeless veterans. The projects provide affordable housing opportunities to households at or below 80 percent of the area median income, with 83 percent serving households at or below 50 percent of area median income.

The Housing Trust Fund awarded 47 projects from a list of 75 applications asking for a total of $89.6 million in state funding.

Of the $48 million awarded, $18.7 million will directly fund construction of new units or redevelopment of aging housing. This state investment accounts for approximately 10 percent of the $196 million in overall construction costs. These construction projects will generate job opportunities in 29 of the state’s 39 counties.

“Maximizing the state’s investment with other sources of funding is a key priority,” said Commerce Director Rogers Weed. “The Housing Trust Fund worked closely with numerous public agencies to leverage a total $270 million in funds from private, federal and local sources, or more than $5.50 for every state dollar spent.”

Total funding for the projects includes almost $29 million in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grants and loans, and an estimated $139 million in Low Income Housing Tax Credit investments.

The Housing Trust Fund supports community efforts to ensure the availability of safe, decent and affordable housing by providing loans and grants for construction, acquisition and rehabilitation of low-income multi-family and single-family housing. Since 1989, the Housing Trust Fund has increased or improved the stock of affordable housing in Washington by more than 38,000 units and has invested approximately $900 million toward new and improved housing, leveraging more than $2 billion in private and public sector support.
