US Leads in Clean Energy Investment with Recovery Act

April 12th, 2012

The US attracted $48 billion in clean energy investment in 2011, reclaiming the top spot from China, according to a new report form the Pew Charitable Trusts.  Pew attributes substantial increase in U.S. investment (up to 42.5 percent over 2010) to a rush of spending as investors took advantage of Recovery Act programs before they expired at the end of 2011.  In China, which led last year’s ranking, investment modestly increased to $45.5 billion.  With the end of U.S. stimulus  programs, China appears well situated to regain the top spot this year.    Click on the link below to read the entire report:

Commerce broadband grants available for unserved areas of the state

March 28th, 2012

Community and region wide broadband planning efforts get an assist from new grant funds available through the Washington State Broadband Office.

The Washington State Department of Commerce today announced that applications are available for the Local Technology Planning Team grant program. The grants awards will range from $50,000 to $100,000 and are part of the work of Commerce’s Washington State Broadband Office.

The Broadband Office was created in 2009 legislation and is charged coordination, programming, and outreach on opportunities for funding, education and awareness of broadband issues. The Office’s work is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act by the National Telecommunications and Information Agency. The Washington State Broadband Map was launched in May of 2010 and shows a steadily improving picture of broadband access in the state.  But there are still areas of the state that are unserved or underserved and many of these areas are rural and remote. The grants, which require a local match, will help these communities move toward broadband deployment and adoption.

“Rural economic development efforts are more successful when key infrastructure is in place,” said Rogers Weed, director of the Washington State Department of Commerce. “We see broadband as one of those essential pieces of infrastructure.”

The grant application deadline is 5 p.m. on May 31 and grant awards will be announced in June. Application instructions and the grant application can be found on the Broadband Office website at www.broadband.wa.gov.  The competitive grant process is expected to draw dozens of applications, many from communities that have already begun work on broadband issues.

“We are hoping these grants result in strong community and regional broadband plans for unserved or underserved parts of our state,” said Will Saunders, program and policy director for the Broadband Office. “Communities with broadband access can not only improve their economies but also take full advantage of the benefits of e-government, telehealth and distance learning to improve the quality of life for their residents.”

Free Webinar in April Will Focus on Answers to Questions about SBA Disaster Loan Program

March 28th, 2012

In the aftermath of a natural or man-made disaster, you don’t have to be a small business owner to get recovery assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration.  But did you know that SBA’s disaster assistance program is the agency’s only direct loan program?  Did you also know that SBA can provide assistance to communities in the aftermath of a disaster, independent of a Presidential disaster declaration?

Interesting and useful facts about the range and depth of SBA’s disaster assistance programs will be presented during the April 10 webinar hosted by Agility Recovery Solutions and SBA.  The webinar will focus on questions typically asked by the public and local media after a disaster.  In addition to clarifying SBA’s partnership with FEMA, we’ll also talk about SBA’s outreach to local banks to expand the support network for business recovery after a disaster.

SBA has partnered with Agility to offer business continuity strategies through its “PrepareMyBusiness” website. Visit www.preparemybusiness.org to access past webinars and get additional preparedness tips.

The SBA provides disaster recovery assistance in the form of low-interest loans to homeowners, renters, private nonprofits and businesses of all sizes. To learn more, visit www.sba.gov/disaster.

SBA Announces Second Round of Grants under State Trade and Export Promotion Program

March 28th, 2012

Agency Seeks to Increase number of Small Businesses Exporting, Value of Small Business Sales Abroad

The U.S. Small Business Administration is inviting states and U.S. territories to apply for $30 million in grants that can be used in a variety of ways to help increase exporting by small businesses. SBA began accepting applications on March 27.

“Federal investment in small business exporting is already beginning to pay dividends in foreign sales and economic development, which translates into a stronger economy and job creation,” said SBA Administrator Karen Mills.

“Through the STEP program, new-to-export and new-to-market firms are selling American products and services in markets all over the world. The future looks even more exciting – with key marketing initiatives ranging from South Korea, to India and the European Union. This year’s grants will further help states assist small businesses enter and succeed in the global market.”

The State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) grant initiative, launched under the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010, is a pilot grant program authorizing up to $90 million in grants to the states and U.S. territories over three years to help them increase the number of businesses that export, as well as the value of exports by small businesses.

In fiscal year 2011, the STEP program awarded 52 grants totaling $30 million. The average grant was for $577,000.

Each state, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa may submit a single application under the program each year. Activities authorized include participation in foreign trade missions and market sales trips, subscription to services provided by the Department of Commerce, design of international marketing products and campaigns, export trade show exhibits, training, and other efforts aligned with program goals.

The STEP program announcement will be posted at www.Grants.gov on March 27, 2012. The application period will be March 27, 2012 through May 17, 2012. Awards will be issued by September 30, 2012. See more information at www.sba.gov/STEP.

Port Angeles is Introducing Metro-Net…

January 12th, 2012

The OlyPen Newsletter

Tues 10 Jan, 2012 / Issue #05

A New Year… An Exciting New Project

Port Angeles is Introducing Metro-Net, a HUGE Citywide Wireless Network…and OlyPen is Proud to be Part of It! As we kick off 2012, OlyPen is excited to announce that, by the end of the year, Port Angeles could have the nation’s largest citywide wireless network in place, and that we get to play a part in this ground-breaking development!

This new network, known as Metro-Net, will use cutting-edge technology to connect the city, using almost three miles of newly installed fiber lines. As a result, the entire 10.7 square mile town of Port Angeles will be virtually one giant internet hot spot. While other communities across America have tried similar citywide networks, Metro-Net is bigger and more expansive than its counterparts. “This is what most cities can only dream of,” Greg Murphy, vice president of outdoor and mesh networks with Aruba Networks, was quoted as saying in the Peninsula Daily News.

And what a dream it is. Metro-Net is projected to have a huge impact on the city of Port Angeles, in a number of important ways. First of all, the citywide network will improve public safety by serving as an important tool for law enforcement officials, fire fighters, and other first responders. Metro-Net will be a boon to police officers, who will be able to use the network to quickly access information about locations and criminal activity, file reports, and even control surveillance cameras from the field, rather than waiting until they can get back to a wired connection inside the station house. Metro-Net will also help fire fighting personnel to do their work more quickly and efficiently. The network will allow them to get quick, updated information when responding to fires, and even give them the capability to access patient information when responding to a medical call. In this capacity, Metro-Net has the potential to serve as a life-saving tool for the people of our community.

This citywide wireless network also stands to benefit the people of Port Angeles by allowing residents and visitors to connect to the internet from anywhere within the city. That’s where OlyPen comes in. As a component of Metro-Net, the city of Port Angeles will offer subscription-based wireless internet hot spot service throughout the city. This internet service will, at least initially, be exclusively provided by OlyPen.

We’re also pleased to announce that, in addition to subscription-based wireless service, OlyPen will provide limited free wireless internet access to the people of Port Angeles, as part of the city’s Metro-Net program. Once Metro-Net is in place, OlyPen will provide one hour of free wireless internet hot spot service per person each day. In addition, we’ll also provide 24-hour completely free wireless access throughout the city 12 days of the year. These free days will be determined by the city, and will likely coincide with local festivals, such as Derby Days, or the Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival.

Such services may be in place very soon. While provisions of the federal grant provided to help offset program installation costs mandate that Metro-Net is up and running by August 2013, city officials believe that the network could be in place even sooner, perhaps even by the end of 2012.

The OlyPen team is thrilled to be part of such an exciting technological advance within our community, and will keep our customers updated on Metro-Net’s development. “We feel extremely fortunate and proud to be part of something of this scope and sophistication,” says OlyPen founder and President Mike Breen. “Our community is lucky to be putting something in place that few other cities in our nation have, and we at OlyPen are excited to have a hand in it. Metro-Net is a wonderful development for the city of Port Angeles and its people, and we’re looking forward to watching it grow and benefit the lives of people in our community for years to come.”
